For these last four weeks of free reading, I chose to read the Sacred Tales of India by D. N. Neogi. I am going to be doing my reading notes over part A today.
Snatched From Death
- King Asvapati of Ujjayinee belonged to the solar race of the monarchs
- he had lots of land and seas and even a wife
- this did not bring him true happiness though
- he never was blessed with children
- he prayed to the gods in hope that he and his wife could be blessed with a child
- the gods listened and it. seemed like it had worked
- they blessed them with a baby girl
- she grew up in the most perfect lifestyle
- as she grew it was time for her to marry
- there were no suitable young men so she sought out different towns in hopes of finding a perfect fit
- in one of her outings, she found love at first sight but chose to keep it a secret
- her. father thinking she had found no desirable match, decided to hold a ceremony of the best men in the country
- she told her father there was no need to hold this ceremony for she was in love with the son of a hermit
- her father was astonished and could never allow his daughter to be married to the son. of a hermit
- the boy showed up at the castle and begged for the king to hear his story
- he explained that his father was not in fact a hermit, but actually, a king banished from his castle
- her father agreed to let her marry this man
- she lived with her husband in the forest with his parents and had abandoned the life of the throne
- they were both happy
- but there was a curse placed upon him that she could not reveal
- the next morning she knew the curse was coming and she was praying to the gods in hopes for it to stop
- they went out to the forest and as he was climbing a tree he was struck with a massive headache that caused him to fall off the tree
- he was not dead but in terrible pain
