For these last four weeks of free reading, I chose to read the Sacred Tales of India by D. N. Neogi. I am going to be doing my reading notes over part D today.
The Fatal Oath
- a Brahman had two sons and a daughter
- the daughter was married and lived not too far away from her father
- the father's wife had fallen ill and passed away
- although the daughter lived close to her family she had not heard about her mother's death
- she was curious
- she called her father and found out about the terrible news
- she cried in grief
- her sister in law asked her to comb her hair
- through her tears, she explained that her mother would never make her do such a thing in such times of sorrow
- she still obeyed and combed her sister in laws hair
- the sisters bickerred
- finally, they came to a conclusion that each was right in their own way and swore it upon both of their families and children
- soon before they knew it both of their families passed
- they grieved. together
- the women set out on a path to find the goddess and ask. for forgiveness
- they set out and passed by a plum tree which they knew they should not speak to
- the plum tree cried saying it would lead them in the right direction if they took some of her fruit and gave it to the goddess
- they kept walking ignoring the tree
- they then saw a cow
- the cow cried if they took a jugful of its milk it would lead them in the right direction
- she took the milk
- she then stumbled across a boat and knew that this boat would take her to the goddess
- she begged for help and the people took her aboard
- she cried to the goddess asking why this was happening to her
- the goddess told her to go to her father's house where she would find a picture and she would need to pray and cleanse it
- she did so and her whole family regained life
