For these last four weeks of free reading, I chose to read the Sacred Tales of India by D. N. Neogi. I am going to be doing my reading notes over part C today.
The Sun's Twin Sons
- This story is about Jokai who was still young at this point and unmarried
- she was in the brahman caste
- one day the king needed rice patties, but it was raining all day and they would not dry in time for his ceremony
- he knew that Jokai had the powers to reach to tell the sun to dry them
- he called her over one day and asked for her help
- she said the shine would shine the next day
- she prayed to the god daily and was fully devoted to him
- she was worried though that prayer would not suffice and that he would want something more tempting
- she offered the god herself in return that he would shine the next day
- he could not resist and agreed
- he shone oh so bright the next day and loaded Jokai with gifts
- she was ashamed to be getting married at such a young age
- so when the god came she hid
- she would not come out, so he decided to marry her spirit
- the people began to talk terrible thing about her
- the king has heard this and summoned her to his castle
- she had birthed two sons and she hid them and went to the castle
- she deceived everyone there and the king dismissed her with a load of gifts
- on her way back she picked up her two sons and headed home
- her neighbors overheard her
- they saw that her sons once touched by the son turned into blood and then at sunset returned back to their human form
- the king sent messengers to her house to see if she had concealed children
- the messengers showed up during the daytime when the boys were in their liquid state and she poured. them out by a tree near her house
- the messengers did not see anything and left
- the boys made this tree their forever home
- whenever. anyone would pass by they would speak in a voice that would scare anyone off making them drop all their food and belongings
- this is how they would get food
