104. SUGRIVA FIGHTS VALI
- Sugriva and Rama make a deal
- Sugriva would fight Vali
- As they would fight Rama Would shoot Vali in the back with an arrow
- As the fight went on Rama could not tell who was who
- he did not shoot
- Sugriva fled
- Sugriva questioned why Rama didn't shoot
- Sugriva wore a flower garland and they fought again
- Rama shot Vali
- He fell fatally injured
- his wife wept
- she said Sita would be released but not without grief
- The sea monster Surasa rose up from the waters and opened her mouth yelling "feed me"
- She exclaimed that everyone should feed her or be her food
- Hanuman yelled back that he had no food to give her
- She said she would eat him instead
- Hanuman grew so big he was larger than Surasa herself
- But she opened her mouth wider and wider
- Hanuman then shrunk so small that he buzzed between her teeth before she shut her mouth
- he then remarked that he offered himself as food and she failed to eat him
- she was impressed with his escape
- Ravana knew that monkeys were proud of their tails
- Since he could not kill Hanuman, he decided to set his tail on fire
- as he did so, Hanuman set Ravana's throne on fire
- he set the whole palace on fire
- As well as the whole town of Lanka, house by house
- he did not set Ashoka grove (where Sita was) on fire
- she prayed for Hanuman's protection
- As the monkeys and bears were hurrying to build the bridge across the ocean for Rama to cross a squirrel wanted to help also
- Since it was so small it could not carry the heavy rocks
- instead, it ran to the sand, rolled around in it, ran back, and shook the sand off its fur
- the monkeys were mean and tried to kick him out saying they needed real workers
- Rama yelled back that everyone's help is useful
- in gratitude, Rama ran his finger down the squirrels back
- This is why. squirrels have a stripe down their back
- The bridge soon reached halfway to Lanka
- but during the night it was seen that sea monsters were destroying it, tearing apart rocks
- Hanuman tried to find out who did this and dove deep down into the ocean to find a palace
- he found the mermaid Suvannamaccha
- she told him Ravana told her to destroy the bridge
- she was fond of Hanuman
- She told him she was sorry and would help repair the bridge
- he smiled at her
- she would later bear his son Macchanu
- Ravana knew that Rama's army was ready to attack
- he summoned the greatest magician that he knew
- he wanted the magician to replicate Rama's head so he could show it to Sita
- the magician did so
- Ravana took the head and threw it towards Sita
- She fainted
- Once she awoke he told her Rama was dead and she must be his wife
- she declined and told him to kill her as well
- Then the head instantly disappeared
- his mission to fool her had failed once again
